Hey Dan, if I am understanding Example #3 correctly, "hope and pray" apparently does qualify as intent to pocket a ball.

I say to the concept of political correctness: "Towards thee I roll, thou all-destroying but unconquering evil; to the last I grapple with thee; from hell’s heart I stab at thee; for hate’s sake I spit my last breath at thee."

I really like that word "intent" you could really argue that one. I am glad that this video cleared up any questions about what is or is not a defensive shot.

like the guy said, if the shooter shoots hard enough to try and make something, his 'intent' was to pi$$ something in and keep shooting, but their intent is just to make a good hit, that is defense.... made perfect sense to me.

I guess the "intent" is to either stay at the table (no Defensive shot marked) or pass your turn to the oppenent (Defensive shot marked)

Now we just need to do it that way!!
It is unfortunate that this relies on the integity AND expertise of every player including the new players to work properly.

Daniel,

What is your take on the Offensive defense. I often choose a harder shot to cover myself better in the event of a miss. Some would say this is an intentional miss defense because it often results in an effective blocking of a busy pocket. I sometimes do intentionally miss this way, but I always call it in those cases. Most times I am trying to make the shot even if it would leave me worse on the next object ball because of the potential defensive position if I miss. In these cases my intent is both to pocket the ball AND to play defensively.
How should that be marked? Should I be calling defensive on these before I shoot them so they will be marked defensive even if the ball goes in?

If your intent is to make the ball and there might be a chance of leaving it, you still have intent to make it. You might want to call that out in that case maybe so a defense isn't marked when not needed.

the shot is called a 2 way shot and is perfectly legal...Just make sure you let the score keepers know if you intend to pass the turn to the opponent

So in short: Intend to shoot again - No Defense
Intend to Not shoot again = Defense

The hope-and-pray thing contradicts what I have been told. Very interesting stuff.
