I have been thinking about this for a while now and after the last awards "event/tourney" I thought I would finally rant about it. Why do we need so many trophies and plaques? Most of the members in the Triad APA do not attend the awards ceremony. Even less members care about receiving trophies or plaques. I am suggesting that the Triad APA cut down on the amount of trophies handed out, and I mean to the minimum.
Finals winners Session winners* Big Dawg
*(Regular season, not playoffs, any team can get wild card draw and win 2 matches)
Forget the plaques, the names are on the trophies and most of the trophies sit at the bar and collect dust. If you forget what team you played on that won anything, then you can visit the bar, drink a beer and reminisce, heck make it a team reunion and have fun with it. The bar would appreciate the business.
Now, what to do with the money not spent on trophies and plaques? I believe it should be given to the Ladies Division. This is a great division for the ladies in the Triad to be involved in and be able to play. The winners to Vegas this past time did not get the $8,000 per team to go. Since it is a smaller division the funds are not as much, but not buying all the trophies and plaques would help them. I am sure an amount more wouldn't hurt with flight and hotel.
Why am I am pushing for the ladies division? The ladies division can recruit the low ranks that have never played. When they found out how much they like pool they will look for other nights to play on and will look for other teams during the week. Now all divisions win with new players coming in. It is getting very difficult to find new low rank players now a days.
This is the end of my rant. Now remember this is my "Blog" and only my opinion. If you don't like it, I don't care. If you do like it, then I probably still won't care.
And no, I haven't been drinking... yet.

How you accept defeat says more about you than the game you bring. People will see good pool players come and go, but the ones who always bring a positive attitude, win or lose, will be the ones who are remembered.

I agree with you on "money better spent". Here are my thoughts as to why they give out so many trophies, plaques, awards, etc.
Getting to Vegas with a regular-league-play team that isn't "adjusting" their handicaps is actually fairly difficult. Odds are definitely against the average team/player. Starts with the session, then playoffs, then prelims, and then finals while maintaining a 23 and under handicap. And this system only goes one full cycle per year. Anyway, all that said, it explains why there are so many awards. In order to keep people interested in paying ~$7 per night each week to play pool, dangling "Vegas" at the finish line isn't enough. People who come in 3rd (now 2nd since Valley Forge is gone) at finals feel like they've lost an entire year of pool and their valuable time. Several teams that finish under them tend to fall into the "this is starting to feel like a job" routine. The end result is that this hobby, in which we start out with the best of intentions, turns into a routine that we don't always enjoy. The trophies, honorable mentions, patches, plaques, etc. are small ways to keep people interested. These little things obviously add up ($) in time though. The players start out and often continue to play because they are interested in the game, competition, friendships, etc. It doesn't change the fact that the APA is a business model meant to make money. That's where the routine part for players falls into place. We don't really get much time off, several weekends at a time get filled up quickly with special events, and holidays that open our eyes to wanting a week off start taking their toll on our love of the game. There isn't anything wrong with the system since it brings so many pool players together, but if you look at the inner workings of most things good, they have their flaws. Anyway, enough of my rant"ish" reply.
Basically, gotta keep people feeling appreciated or accomplished to continue helping the league grow or at least maintain its size. Our love of the game can only do so much. And I like the idea of supporting the women's league as well as Master's. They don't supply the league with as much money, but at least they offer a change of pace from the normal league play.

| I agree with what you said in that the trophies and plaques should keep people interested. However, most of the time teams or people don't even pick up the trophies or plaques. Then they get dropped off at the bar and then the bar has to ask the people to take them home. When the plaques finally get taken home they are put up and quickly forgotten or just thrown away. Maybe it is just the people I hang around in pool, but that seems to be the common trend. |

I think they should use the money as pay back to teams that win their divisions or prelims, etc. I've seen other area Apa franchises that pay money to winning players as well as giving a small fee to players for winning an MVP award. That by itself would do something to help with "cheating" issue in the league. We could also use the money to start other divisions such as; a doubles division, a handicap limit 30 division that has a cash payout to the winners. Raleigh has both of these divisions with success. |

I agree that there is way too many awards. This is not a kids league.
However, I would use the money to fund the "potential" monetary loss of giving 1 to 2 weeks off per session. I personally think the breaks would pay for them self by avoiding the "APA burnout", but the money saved on the trophies and other awards should be used to protect against the risk, short term. |

| Perhaps one should remember the third of their eight commandments in their post "Hope it rubs everyone the wrong way", Why can't the league do this?" I,ve always been told if it ain't broke don't fix it as my players have always enjoyed and appreciated their awards that they themselves earned and I also believe this is not a good time to start putting extra pressures on the staff for changes with the situation at hand with Daniel and his family. I suggest we as a pool family try to keep things smooth and simple as possible during this time. Pardon to anyone for any offensiveness in this post. |
